Srimad Bhagavad Gita and Divine Love
(Srimad Bhagavad Gita aur Bhagwat Prem)
Till today, you cannot find a single example in history, where one has become completely gratified, satiated with sense enjoyments. While many have realized God and become gratified forever -
Bahavo gyaanatapasaa pootaa madbhaavamaagataah |
(Gita 4/10)
‘Purified by the penance of knowledge, many have attained union with My being.’ (Gita 4/10)
Many have attained God. Here the word 'many' (bahu) has been used. Bhagavad Gita explains this 'Supreme Truth' with great simplicity. One can realize God, while doing work in this world - the means have been revealed in the Gita -
Yat karoshi, yadashnaasi yajjahoshi dadaasi yat |
Yat tapasyasi kaunteya tatkurushva madarpanam
(Gita 9/27)
'O' son of Kunti! Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever sacrifices you perform, whatever charities you give and whatever austerities you do, offer them all to Me.' (Gita 9/27)
While relating with others, while conducting business, while doing house work, let the longing for God be prime. All this work is God's work and it is for God only that you are doing this work. I eat food to please God; I drink water, to please God; I sleep, to please Him, and not to get rest and relaxation. I do not work for enjoying pleasures myself. If you remember these points, then, whatever you do, will become 'bhajan' (worship, remembrance and adoration of the Lord).
If any work is done with straight-forwardness, for the love of God, leaving aside sins, injustice, lies, cheating, dishonesty, betrayal etc., then with that work itself, one can realize the Lord. This is such an extra-ordinary point. Neither do you have to become a 'sadhu' (ascetic), nor leave the house, nor do you need to run or go anywhere. Gita has shown the art of spirituality, while relating with the world. What amazing insights have been shared in the Gita.
I was reciting the Gita one day, when it came to my mind that the 'transcendental and divine love and devotion' (parabhakti) that is attained after realization of knowledge, that same 'parabhakti' can be attained through spreading the message of Gita -
'Bhaktim mayi paraam krutvaa maamevaishyatyasanshayah'
(Gita 18/68)
He who teaches and/or reads the Gita, with love, he attains My 'parabhakti'. He who by devoting himself to Me, and loving Me, shares the Gita with others, will attain Me.
That 'Parabhakti' revealed in Gita verses 18/49 through 18/55, is unique, and exceptional. It is the beyond the highest knowledge. To attain this 'parabhakti', an uninterrupted solitude, deep engrossment in meditation is needed. However, that same 'parabhakti' can be attained through spreading the message of the Gita.
Gita does not talk about changing your situation, rather it talks about purifying 'parimaarjan.' In whatever work you do, renounce the prohibited / forbidden actions, and do the work only to please God. If all the work is done as per the Lord's command, then you can get joy from this world, and you will realize God.
I had met a devotee in 'Chokhaa mela' in the South. He belonged to the shoemaker 'jaati.' If an animal died, he used to drag it and take it away. His body was weak and often he was unable to drag the dead animal, and God Himself used to apply His strength in dragging the animals. Thus the Lord even aided in moving the dead bodies. Now what is more menial form of work than that? Even while doing the most ordinary, the greatest or the cruelest of all works, God can be attained; only one has to ensure that the purity is observed in all the works. Let there be no injustice, lies, cheating, dishonesty, and the work is conducted with truthfulness, for the welfare of all, with great love and reverence. By just doing that work itself, God can be realized.
'Swakarmana tambhyarchya siddhim vindati maanavah ||'
(Gita 18/46)
Gita is a unique scripture. Read and study it; contemplate on it. Understand the deeper sentiments and significance. In Gita, many points have been explained with great ease and simplicity. With a true and simple heart, become intensely engaged in attaining God - then whatever work you are doing, from that alone you will attain the love of God. Such incredible things have been written in the Gita. Now what to tell you! I have never got satiated by talking about the Gita. If one reveals the meaning of a verse, then too I do not get satisfied, and I do not know that much. My study is quite limited, then too new meanings keep arising (in my mind) and new unusual and unique points appear. So extra-ordinary is Bhagavad Gita. You all must study it.
